Queensland 2nd Sideface Stamps 1882-95 by Dr Jeremy Hodes: Queensland 1 shilling multiples

Postally used blocks or larger multiples are very rare as postage of 4 shillings or more would have to have been a heavy or big parcel. The rate for parcels from 1891-1900 within Queensland was 6d. up to 1lb. and then 3d. for each additional pound. The intercolonial rate was 8d. up to 1lb. and then 6d. for each additional pound. Parcels sent to the United Kingdom attracted a rate of 1 shilling for the first lb and 6d. for each additional pound. Presumably for bigger parcels to the United Kingdom the 2 shilling or higher denomination stamps would have been used, although I am not aware of any used 2 shilling 2nd sideface blocks in existence.

A postally used block of 4, SG 172, lilac, perf 12, datestamped Ipswich 5 July 1892 code B. I don't know where this parcel was sent but if it was to an address within Queensland it would have weighed 15 pounds. If it was sent to one of the Australian colonies or New Zealand it would have weighed at least 7.5 pounds.

A beautiful block of 10 of the 1 shilling SG 174, pale mauve. Manuscript writing is illegible on the first line (perhaps Brisbane Ne[wspaper]) and the second line says Company Limited. I think it is a pre-perfin example of writing the Newspaper company name on the stamps to stop them being stolen! I have many other examples of this practice on 2nd sideface stamps and they all involved newspaper companies. The cancellation is Brisbane GPO. This would have been a big and heavy parcel! A postally used block of 4, numeral 116, Macalister, rated common, seen on Stampboards.com. It also has a manuscript cancel, perhaps a security measure?
